Biography / Administrative History

Oliver Cromwell (O.C.) Applegate Jr. was the grandson of Lindsay Applegate, one of the founders of the South Road of the Oregon Trail. His father, O.C. Applegate, Sr. was a captain in the Oregon Milita and served as a scout and interpreter during the Modoc War of 1872-3. He was also appointed as a U.S. Commissioner in 1873 and then Klamath Indian Agent in 1898. His son, O.C. Applegate, Jr. came to San Francisco in 1915, where he became a resident and remained for the duration of his life, except for time he spent in the army during World War I.
